Description:

East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A beautifully preserved polychrome terracotta mingqi, or "spirit utensil," depicting a female attendant rendered in the stylized manner of tomb sculpture. Standing with hands demurely clasped within elongated sleeves, this figure adopts a posture of quiet reverence, her slightly forward-leaning stance signaling deference appropriate to her ritual role in the afterlife. The robe is cold-painted without glaze, in white accented by vivid red stippling and black stripes. Such figures were crafted to accompany elite individuals in burial, symbolically serving them in the next world and ensuring the continuity of earthly status in the ancestral realm.   • Condition: Repaired, lower skirt has 3 large pieces reattached with visible break line along the side and front, the front is infilled with soil to conceal the break. Rest of the figure is well preserved. Heavy mineral and earthen deposits on the surface. Some fading and losses to pigments, but good remains.
