Description:

**Originally Listed At $300**

East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A rare and elegant pottery ladle from the Han dynasty, its long curving handle sweeping upward with a graceful arch before tapering to a squared end. The deep bowl, rounded at its base, was carefully fashioned to serve both functional and ceremonial roles. Traces of red pigment remain visible inside the vessel, scientifically confirmed to contain 1.7% mercury, an indicator of cinnabar. This mineral was highly prized in ancient China for its brilliant vermilion hue and for its association with immortality, alchemy, and ritual. Cinnabar played an important role in Han funerary practices, often applied to tomb furnishings, ritual vessels, and even the body of the deceased, symbolizing transformation and eternal life. The presence of this pigment on the ladle suggests a ritual rather than utilitarian function, linking it to the Han dynasty's elaborate beliefs surrounding death and the afterlife. Size: 9.6" L x 3.5" W (24.4 cm x 8.9 cm)

This piece not only reflects the technical skill of Han ceramicists but also embodies the cultural and spiritual values of one of China's most formative dynasties.
