Description:

East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. An intact Chinese Han dynasty pottery tomb attendant figure, fashioned in a graceful, elongated style characteristic of mingqi (tomb furnishings). The attendant is depicted standing upright with hands clasped before the body, his form distinguished by a long, flowing robe that flares outward at the base. Traces of original red and white pigments remain visible, offering a glimpse into the vibrant polychromy that once enlivened the figure. The face is stylized yet expressive, with almond-shaped eyes and a composed demeanor, reflecting the solemn duty of eternal service. Such figures were interred within elite tombs as substitutes for living servants, intended to provide comfort and assistance to the deceased in the afterlife. The careful rendering of the robe and posture reflects the Han dynasty's emphasis on order, ritual, and the continuation of earthly hierarchies in the next world. Size: 4.1" L x 5.3" W x 17.8" H (10.4 cm x 13.5 cm x 45.2 cm)

An evocative survival from ancient China, this figure embodies both the artistry and spiritual beliefs of the Han dynasty, where mingqi served as vessels of protection and guardians of status in eternity.
