Description:

East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A large, mold-made ceramic model of a stove with three round holes for cauldrons or steamers and the surface painted with depictions of food in red. The base has one side open, forming a fire door, showing how a real stove would have been heated. High status Han burials contained realistic and detailed pottery models of furniture, buildings, animals, and people to provide for the dead in the afterlife. Stoves were significant because of the offerings made to the stove god, Zao Jun (also known as the hearth or kitchen god), who served as an intermediary between the family and other gods. Size: 9.5" L x 10.35" W x 4.4" H (24.1 cm x 26.3 cm x 11.2 cm)
