Description:

East Asia, China, Song Dynasty, ca. 960 to 1279 CE. A pottery relief-molded funerary tile, presenting two powerful symbols of protection and immortality. Once fully painted, the tile retains remains of its original color - green on the firecracker and yellow on the figure. On the right stands Lu Dongbin, the legendary Tang Dynasty scholar and one of the revered Taoist Eight Immortals. Known for his mastery of internal alchemy and pursuit of immortality, Lu Dongbin is a fitting funerary figure. Depicted in his scholarly role, he holds a flywhisk, a Taoist symbol of longevity and spiritual purification. Beside him is a firecracker, a traditional object used to ward off evil spirits with its explosive sound. Long associated with festivals like Lunar New Year, firecrackers also symbolize joy, prosperity, and protection - making them a meaningful motif in a tomb setting. Together, Lu Dongbin and the firecracker convey a powerful wish for the happiness, safety, and eternal well-being of the deceased in the afterlife. Size: 8" L x 8" W (20.3 cm x 20.3 cm)
