Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely mutton jade (nephrite) carving of a mythical beast resembling a coiled, recumbent tiger. Boasting natural hues of caramel and mocha, the lengthy animal rests its head on its back, its face presenting a broad snout, bulging eyes, and arched brows beneath pointed ears and spread fins or wings. Its tail turns up at the end, splitting into 3, while an incised crest travels down its back and 4 short legs are shown bent beneath. Size: 2.4" L x 2.2" W x 1.3" H (6.1 cm x 5.6 cm x 3.3 cm)

Provenance: private Great Barrington, Massachusetts, USA collection, 1995 to 2005 or via inheritance; ex-JCT collection, U.S. Navy Commander, assembled 1926 to 1934
