Description:

East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 15th to 17th century CE. A seated wooden figure of Guanyin, Bodhisattva of Compassion, carved in the round and retaining traces of original polychrome in soft reds, blues, greens, and cream. The serene face is marked by a calm, downcast gaze and a indented urna, framed by an elaborate crown and hair gathered in a topknot. Flowing robes fall in folds tied with a knotted sash, with curling scarf ends cascading over the shoulders and arms. Viewed from the reverse, the back is fully modeled and painted, suggesting the sculpture once occupied a temple or shrine niche. Weathered surfaces and areas of pigment loss throughout lend the work a profound sense of age and devotional use, underscoring its quiet authority and enduring spiritual presence. Size: 14" W x 21" H (35.6 cm x 53.3 cm)
