Lot 98
Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. This well-modeled pottery figure depicts a mounted attendant, the horse standing firmly on a rectangular base with its head turned slightly to one side. The animal's musculature, mane, and facial details are rendered with the characteristic stylization of Ming tomb sculpture, while the saddle and draped blanket are crisply defined with incised linear detailing. The rider sits upright, wearing a close-fitting cap and long belted tunic, both hands held to his chest. His facial features are articulated with a calm, attentive expression with nicely trimmed goatee. Both horse and rider preserve traces of the original slip and faint remnants of pigment, now softened by burial and mineral accretion. Size: 11.75" L x 14.75" H (29.8 cm x 37.5 cm)
Note: XRF analysis shows red/pink pigmentation is composed of cinnabar. If you win this lot, please use care in handling this piece and wash hands after touching any area.
