Description:

East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 14th to 17th century CE. A vividly glazed pottery panel or architectural tile, richly decorated in the sancai palette of green and ochre yellow. The relief depicts one of the legendary Eight Immortals, shown striding across stylized waves on a flowering branch used to cross the water. Around his neck hangs a string of prayer beads, while over his shoulder he carries a pole with a dangling gourd, a classic symbol of immortality and Daoist magic. The scene references the popular Ming Dynasty theme of the "Eight Immortals Crossing the Ocean," where each immortal employs their unique attributes to overcome obstacles. Such tiles were often produced for temple or garden walls, celebrating Daoist mythology and conveying auspicious blessings. Mounted for modern display, this piece exemplifies the vibrancy and charm of late Ming ceramic art. Size: 13.5" L x 4.5" W x 20.5" H (34.3 cm x 11.4 cm x 52.1 cm); 22" H (55.9 cm) on included custom stand.
