Description:

East Asia, China, ca. Ming to Qing dynasty, ca. 16th to 19th century CE. A serene carved wooden figure of an arhat (luohan), seated on an integral pedestal with draped, flowing robes cascading over the knees. The figure is bald-headed, with a calm and contemplative expression. One hand is raised in the Shuni Mudra gesture, while the other cradles a bowl. The back of the figure features a rectangular consecration niche, covered by a fitted panel. Faint traces of darkened pigments remain across the surface, hinting at the original painted decoration that once enlivened the carving. A work of quiet presence and spiritual character, traditionally meant for temple or shrine veneration. Size: 4.75" W x 9" H (12.1 cm x 22.9 cm)

The shunya (or shuni) mudra, formed by touching the tip of the middle finger to the thumb while extending the other fingers, is traditionally believed to dispel inner noise and enhance spiritual discipline. In Buddhist iconography, it is often interpreted as a sign of deep introspection and mental focus - virtues befitting a lohan, who is revered for having attained enlightenment through unwavering devotion.
