Description:

East Asia, China, Neolithic period, Hongshan culture. Late 4th to 3rd millennium BCE. Deep nephrite jade amulet carved in the form of a fantastical supernatural being. This beast is commonly shown in ancient Chinese jades and was certainly used as a talisman to ward off evil. Upon his head sits another creature, this one sporting wings, long ears and bulging eyes, possibly representing a bat. It is so uplifting to find an authentic example of these often faked jades! Size: 0.8" W x 2.375" H (2 cm x 6 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private T. Misenhimer collection, Beverly Hills, California, USA, collected from 1970 to 2008
