Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 18th century CE. A serene wooden figure of Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, depicted seated cross-legged upon a lotus throne, her hands resting in meditation (dhyana mudra). She wears flowing robes bearing remains of original red cinnabar and black pigment, and a distinctive five-lobed crown, symbolizing her exalted spiritual authority. The figure is carved with a sense of quiet dignity, embodying compassion and inner stillness. The reverse of the sculpture reveals a hollowed niche cavity. The presence of this cavity, once filled with sacred offerings, further indicates that the piece was consecrated and imbued with spiritual significance and power. Such niches were created to hold sacred deposits or relics - often tiny scrolls, sutras, prayers, or offerings - placed inside to spiritually "activate" the statue. Size: 5.75" W x 12.5" H (14.6 cm x 31.8 cm)
