Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 1644 to 1912 CE. A 91% silver ingot known as a saddle sycee, a traditional form of Chinese currency. The silver is mold cast with slightly tapered tab ends, and a rectangular depression in the center. The top side is covered with raised character inscriptions. Silver ingots have been used in China for centuries and come in a variety of shapes, and originally may have functioned as silver reserves for the wealthy. The sycee became accepted currency when making large purchases and were often stamped with the silver quality.
