Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A carved greenstone pendant in the form of a stylized bird, rendered in a manner inspired by much earlier Neolithic jade traditions. The figure displays broad, downward-curving wings and a compact body with a projecting head and beak, the surfaces subtly incised to suggest feather details. A drilled perforation through the head allows the piece to be suspended as a pendant. The smooth polish and simplified geometric form deliberately echo archaic jade carvings produced in ancient China thousands of years earlier. Such revivalist works became especially popular during the Qing Dynasty, when scholars and collectors developed a deep appreciation for antiquity and artisans created objects in homage to early jade styles. Carved from mottled dark green stone with natural mineral veining, the pendant reflects both the enduring symbolic importance of birds in Chinese art and the Qing fascination with recreating the aesthetic language of prehistoric jade carving traditions. Size: 2" L x 2" W (5.1 cm x 5.1 cm)
