East Asia, China, late Qing Dynasty to early Republic period, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A wood block printed paper scroll depicting Emperor Hong Taiji, founding emperor of the Qing dynasty, his name boldly inscribed across the top. This example reproduces his formal court portrait, presenting him in a golden robe adorned with 5-clawed dragons, symbols of power and imperial authority. Seated upon an ornate dragon throne, he wears a vivid red hat surmounted by an intricate gold and jade finial, his solemn expression and composed posture radiating dignity and reverence. Executed with strong black linework and filled with vivid polychrome pigments, the image displays meticulous detailing characteristic of fine woodblock printing. A wooden dowel is attached to both the top and bottom edges, enabling convenient suspension for display and easy rolling for storage. Size: 61" L x 27" W (154.9 cm x 68.6 cm)
