Chinese, late 18th-early 19th c. Sculpture representing a hermit and child carved from Kranghung (rosewood). The hermit is holding a peach which symbolizes eternal life and peace. According to the legend, the hermit is refusing to give the child the peach, because the youth does not yet possess enough experience in life. This story is related to Shangri-la and the legend of His-wang-mu. Comes in custom Japanese wooden box. The staff is a separate piece and is removable. Superb patina! 9cm in height
