Description:

China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 907 CE. This is a large carved grey limestone head of the Buddha with a serene, remote expression that is characteristic of religious imagery in the earlier part of the Tang Dynasty. The half-open eyes are cast down, and the full lips pursed in a gentle smile. The head has an ushnisha. During this time period, the imperial court in China began to patronize religious arts, and all traces of Indian or Central Asian influence have disappeared from this piece -- this is purely Chinese Buddhist. Size: 6" L x 4.25" W x 7.75" H (15.2 cm x 10.8 cm x 19.7 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Meyerson collection, acquired via family descent.
