Description:

East Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 907 CE. A mold made pottery figure of a Bactrian camel standing with a gracefully arched neck and alert head tilted upward. The double-humped form is naturalistically sculpted, and the surface is sancai glazed in an ochre yellow. Figures like this were commonly placed in tombs as mingqi - spirit objects - to symbolize wealth, status, and perhaps ownership of these animals that came to symbolize the trade routes linking China to Central Asia. A robust and lovely representation of one of the most iconic animals of the Silk Road! Size: 8" L x 3" W x 10" H (20.3 cm x 7.6 cm x 25.4 cm)
