Description:

Chorotega, Nicoya Peninsula, western Costa Rica., ca. 300 BCE - 700 CE. Very large hardstone mano (grinding stone) and zoomorphic metate. The mono of elliptical form tapering to cylindrical hand grips. The wide central elliptical area has a very fine surface polish from ancient use, and the hand grips have a smooth matte surface. Roughly hewn at the ends of the grips. Together with a fine carved hardstone metate of rectangular form having a curved grinding table with a projecting mythological creature head, with a large projecting circular tongue. Smooth ancient polished grinding surface from use. Standing on integral tripod legs. An elegant example. Mono: 23.375”L x 4”W (59.4 x 10.2cm), Metate: 33.5”L x 17”W (85.1 x 43.2cm).

Provenance: Private American collection, acquired from Freeman’s/Hindman auction, Chicago. Ex. Stolper Gallery, Los Angeles, Oct. 17th, 1959.
