Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Chorrera to La Tolita (sometimes Tumaco) cultures, ca. 500 BCE to 350 CE. A charming plate on a concave pedestal with a motif of birds - one flying in tondo, its huge claws emphasized as if it is about to snatch up some unsuspecting prey, and the others seated like waterfowl and ringing the base. Repeated wave-like spiral designs form borders around the rim of the vessel and the edge of the base, effectively bounding the birds within a world of water. Three delicate struts attach the bowl to the pedestal, creating an openwork center. These cultures - of which La Tolita is a continuation of the earlier Chorrera style - are known for their ability to portray human and animal subjects in a way that indicates careful observation from life. Particularly the bird in tondo here displays a keen appreciation for its natural subject and its hunting technique. Size: 3.15" W x 3.75" H (8 cm x 9.5 cm)
