Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Chorrera culture, Late Formative Period, ca. 800 to 400 BCE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery vessel of an interesting form depicting a 'flying' shaman laying prone atop a rectangular base. The figure lays on its wide abdomen and raises the enlarged head to reveal slit-form eyes and lips atop a tapered face. The slender arms are bent in front of the head, and thick legs are draped off the back. The vessel is accentuated with brown slip for a ground color, red slip on the head and vessel body, and white pigment on the arms and face. Size: 7.25" L x 3.25" W x 4.3" H (18.4 cm x 8.3 cm x 10.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Hirsch collection, Germany, acquired around 1960

  • Condition: Repaired from multiple pieces, with restoration along some break lines, and resurfacing with overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and minor pitting to base, vessel body, and figure, with fading to areas of original pigment, and light encrustations. Nice traces of remaining pigment throughout. Old inventory label beneath base.
