Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Chorrera culture, Late Formative Period, ca. 800 to 400 BCE. A hand-built redware pottery vessel in the form of an abstract zoomorphic creature, perhaps a portly feline or a petite coati. The figure has a wide and deep body supported by a quartet of stocky legs, a thick tail curling off the posterior, and shallow grooves delineating the shoulders. The raised head exhibits hemispherical eyes, a vertical central crest, a petite nose flanked with incised whiskers, and perky ears. Warm vermilion-hued slip envelops the entire exterior and imbues it with a presentation characteristic of fine Chorrera artistry. Size: 10.7" L x 4.875" W x 5.75" H (27.2 cm x 12.4 cm x 14.6 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from the 1950s to 1960s
