Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, ca. 600 to 1000 CE. A fine hand-built pottery jar with a round but stable base, a globular body with several protruding nodules, a lightly-corseted neck line, and a tall, thick rim with a pair of pinched handles. The front of the neck exhibits a highly-stylized, red-face human with concentric ringed eyes, a perky nose, and a painted mouth full of teeth, with the 'handles' doubling as ears. Both the red face and the black spiraling motifs on the body are presented atop a cream-hued ground, and a pair of abstract saurian heads grace the verso. Size: 4.5" W x 4.625" H (11.4 cm x 11.7 cm).
