Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, Macaracas type, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A spherical pottery jar of round-bottomed form with a tapered shoulder and a thick, in-folded rim. Displayed on the rim is the face of an abstract zoomorphic creature, and painted on the body are its forelegs, underbody, and black fur tufts. The vessel is adorned in hues of black, red, and purple in characteristic Macaracas style. Size: 9.57" Diameter x 7.875" H (24.3 cm x 20 cm)

Provenance: Estate of Peter H. Tillou Collection, thence by descent. Acquired in the 1990s, collection # 128. Appraised by Marianne Huber in 2014.
