Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, ca. 600 to 1000 CE. A hand-built pottery jar with a round but stable base, a spherical body, and a squat neck with a flared lip. The neck and base are ringed with stripes of red and purple pigment outlined in black, and the interior of the lip boasts a solid red stripe. Encircling the body are 4 black-outlined panels showing highly-abstract hybrid creatures known as saurians, each with barbed teeth and sinuous bodies, and lengthy claws. The mythical animals shown here would have been of shamanic or spiritual importance, and the use of the purple pigment suggests this vessel is of the Conte/Macaracas style. Size: 4" W x 3.375" H (10.2 cm x 8.6 cm).
