Description:

Pre-Columbian, Panama, Gran Cocle, Tonosi period, ca. 300 to 550 CE. A beautiful, hand-built pottery vessel hailing from the Gran Cocle kingdom of Central America or present-day Cocle province. Cocle ceramics include some of the most intriguing expressions of visual culture in Prehispanic Central America. Three bands of painted dark-brown undulations atop a cream ground serve as the primary decorative element - detailing the conical neck, sloping shoulder, and bowl-shaped body - with umber and citrine hues embellishing the remaining areas. A fabulous vessel from ancient Panama! Size: 6.25" W x 7" H (15.9 cm x 17.8 cm).

Pottery created during the Tonosi period of the kingdom of Gran Cocle oftentimes have a common design theme defined by two sets of chromatic combinations: either black and red motifs atop a cream ground; or black and white atop a red ground. While colors fade over time (i.e., black appearing as dark-brown, red as orange, etc.), the use of negative space is indicative of the craftsmanship as well as the time period from whence the artifact came. Regardless of the specific era, the artistry of the Gran Cocle kingdom rivals that of even the finest ancient art masters!
