Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle culture, ca. 600 to 1000 CE. A broad pottery plate of circular form with a squat foot and a thick rim. Painted within the beige-hued basin is an anthropomorphic or simian figure of highly abstract form with clawed limbs, a triangular body with projecting shoulders, spiraling ears, and a wide-eyed visage topped with a crested helmet similar to those of Japanese samurai. Size: 11.625" L x 11.875" W x 2.5" H (29.5 cm x 30.2 cm x 6.4 cm)
