Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery shaman seated on a broad base with bent legs extended in front of the portly body. The figure reaches both arms in front of sloped shoulders and holds a triangular object, perhaps a ritual celt, in one hand. The circular face exhibits coffee-bean-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, and cheeks pushed up by the chinstrap of the centrally pointed headdress. Behind the head is a protruding spout, and enveloping the shamanic effigy is vibrant red-orange slip. Size: 5.2" W x 7.4" H (13.2 cm x 18.8 cm)

Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966
