Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A charming and skillfully modeled redware pottery vessel in the form of two conjoined seated ducks. Each bird is rendered with plump, rounded body, upturned tail, and neatly defined beak, their forms fused together at the side to create a symmetrical double effigy. The vessel's spout rises from the back of one bird, allowing the object to function as a container while maintaining its zoomorphic form. Their circular eyes, highlighted in cream slip, animate the pair with a lively presence. Ducks and waterfowl were important symbols in Colima art, reflecting the agricultural abundance and fertility associated with water. Their migratory habits may also have carried cosmological meaning, linked to cycles of renewal and transformation. The conjoined form here adds a further layer of meaning, perhaps suggesting union, duality, or balance. Size: 9.3" L x 7.1" W x 5.3" H (23.6 cm x 18 cm x 13.5 cm)

Colima artisans are celebrated for their naturalistic animal effigies, and this piece is a fine example of their inventive blending of form and function. At once whimsical and sophisticated, the vessel demonstrates the strong sculptural sensibility of West Mexican ceramic traditions.
