Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built pottery canteen vessel in the form of the trunk of a ceiba tree (also known as a kapok). The cylindrical vessel has two smooth bases painted in faint orange pigment, and a slanted spout projecting from one of the rounded sides is painted in red. The sides of the vessel are buff and sculpted into an array of small, irregular spines, mirroring the form of the ceiba tree. Many Mesoamerican cultures, including the Colima, believed that this tree was the tree of life or the "world tree," with roots that descended into the underworld. Size: 4.625" W x 6.75" H (11.7 cm x 17.1 cm).
