Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A spirited redware effigy vessel of a seated Colima dog, modeled with captivating character and a sense of playful urgency. Its plump, portly body sits low to the ground, the hind legs grounded firmly while the forelegs lift slightly, each paw curled inward in a distinctive downturned gesture. From the animal's back rises a cylindrical spout, integrating function with form in classic shaft tomb ceramic tradition. The head turns with animation, mouth clenched around a modeled corn husk - a vivid and textured detail that imbues this piece with both narrative and symbolic depth. Exaggerated limbs, a curled tail, and an alert, twisting pose lend the figure a sense of immediacy. Its surface gleams with a smoky luster, the result of red and black slips fired in a reduced-oxygen environment and further enriched by mineral encrustations from burial. Size: 9.8" L x 10.3" W x 9.9" H (24.9 cm x 26.2 cm x 25.1 cm)

Sharply pointed ears shoot skyward, and deep nostrils above a snarling jaw frame a remarkably expressive face. Most striking is the clenched corn husk - a sacred emblem of sustenance, likely referencing the dog’s role not only as earthly companion but as guide, guardian, and provider in ritual and death.

Colima dog effigies are among the most beloved forms of West Mexican ceramic art, often discovered in elite shaft tombs where they were placed to serve the deceased. Scholars have long interpreted these figures as guides to the underworld, companions in eternity, or even as stand-ins for food offerings. The addition of the corn cob here enriches that symbolism, aligning two of the most vital sources of sustenance in Mesoamerican life: the domesticated dog and the divine maize.
