Lot 55
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, Pihuamo style, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A redware pottery figure of a nude woman, this piece is modeled in the Pihuamo style of Colima, known for its smooth surfaces, compact forms, and lively depiction of daily activities. The woman stands upright with a steady, forward stride, her body rendered with the characteristic simplicity of the region. Petite rounded breasts indicate her gender, while the limbs are shaped as solid, tapering forms that emphasize stability rather than anatomical precision. Balanced on her right shoulder is an olla with a flared rim and neatly incised zigzag patterning along the circumference. She steadies the vessel with one hand, her fingers indicated by shallow grooves. The gesture evokes scenes of water carrying and domestic labor, themes commonly represented in Colima sculpture and tied to the essential rhythms of community life. Size: 4" L x 5.1" W x 8.8" H (10.2 cm x 13 cm x 22.4 cm)
Her facial features are outlined through fine incision: narrow, almond shaped eyes, a long straight nose, and a slightly open mouth that suggests breath or speech. The head is topped with a peaked, helmet like form typical of Pihuamo figures. The surface is coated in a warm red slip that has developed scattered mineral deposits from long burial in the volcanic soils of western Mexico.
