Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, Protoclassic, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. An endering redware parrot vessel presenting a pleasantly plump body, relief wings, and a protruding tail that doubles as a spout, perched upon sturdy feet. Its face, with those large incised ovoid eyes and that pronounced curved beak - open as if calling or chattering away - radiates joy and a rather playful demeanor. In addition to this fabulous form, the iconography is special as the parrot was highly revered by the ancients of the Americas and particularly favored for its colorful feathers. Nicely burnished, boasting highly saturated red hues. Size: 9.55" W x 6.25" H (24.3 cm x 15.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-Sotheby's New York, November 24, 1988, Lot 155, Arthur N. Seiff Collection
