Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima culture, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A redware pottery drum or drum-shaped vessel adorned with dynamic low-relief depictions of coiled rattlesnakes encircling the sides. Each serpent's sinuous body is incised with dot-and-line motifs, evoking the patterned scales of the species, while their rattles are clearly delineated with segments. A remarkable survival from the Colima tradition, radiating the region's distinct sculptural style and reverence for potent natural motifs. The flat bottom and shape suggests use as a percussive instrument, but it may have simply functioned a burial vessel. In Colima culture, the venomous rattlesnake was revered as a powerful protective and fertility symbol, often associated with rain, earth, and agricultural abundance. Size: 7" W x 5.75" H (17.8 cm x 14.6 cm)
