Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, Protoclassic period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A wonderful redware vessel in the form of an adorable, seated figure with prominent pointed ears reminiscent of a Harry Potter house elf! Positioned with arms resting atop drawn up knees, the hunched figure's huge head displays a tranquil countenance with giant, coffee-bean shaped eyes, a sharp, projecting nose, an incised mouth held in a gentle smile, and an elongated forehead. The nose and ears are pieced with petite drill holes for suspending ornaments, while the top of the head opens to the hollow interior of the figure, forming the annular rim of the vessel. Size: 4.5" W x 9.9" H (11.4 cm x 25.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-G. Martin collection, Atlanta, Georgia, USA acquired in the 1980's
