Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima Culture, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A beautiful burnished redware reclinatorio (headrest), finely modeled to represent an avian figure with arms/wings extended, the vessel resting on its splayed tail and feet, with a spout rising behind the head. Reclinatarios such as this were used by individuals of high rank to support their heads and backs when seated. A wonderful exemplar of Colima technique and styling - note the virtuosic combination of geometric yet simultaneously curvilinear forms not to mention the meticulously burnished warm red slipped surface - as well as symbolic meaning. In the Pre-Columbian world, birds were understood as intermediaries between humankind and the deities of the celestial realm. Size: 9.75" W x 9" H (24.8 cm x 22.9 cm)
