Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, Protoclassic, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A redware pottery 'drinker' figure seated with right arm resting on raised right knee and left arm raised to hold a small cup to his mouth. The horned headdress indicates this figure is a shaman likely engaged in a ritualistic ceremony. Added details include a satchel across his chest and pierced ears. His face is beautifully delineated with coffee-bean shaped eyes, arched brows, a protruding naturalistic nose, and a slightly open slit mouth. Presenting a tranquil expression, he is about to imbibe whatever libation fills the cup he is raising to his lips. A wonderful drinker figure from the Colima region of West Mexico. Size: 7.5" W x 15.5" H (19 cm x 39.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-Sotheby's New York, November 24, 1988, Lot 160
