Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, Protoclassic period, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A redware pottery dog shown seated with an alert posture and expressive, forward-facing stance. The figure features an oversized head, upright ears, and incised circular eyes, with a spout at the top for filling the hollow body with liquid offerings. Its rounded form and simplified anatomy reflect the characteristic style of Colima ceramic traditions. Such vessels were placed in shaft tombs, serving as symbolic companions and guardians for the deceased in the afterlife. These figures represent ancient canine types that are distant ancestors of modern Chihuahua and Xoloitzcuintle breeds. Size: 11" L x 4.25" W x 9.25" H (27.9 cm x 10.8 cm x 23.5 cm)
