Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE; Native American, Southeastern United States, Gulf Coast, Florida, likely Weeden Island or Deptford culture, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. A pair of ancient pre-European artifacts from the Americas; a cross in circle engraved shell gorget and a stone axe. The Colima axe or mace head is a rare form, made from a pitted, black stone with a butt end that has 5 nubs to the sides. The shell gorget is pierced for suspension and engraved with lines forming right angles to each other, creating the symbolic cross in a circle motif - the surface smooth and highly polished. Size (axe): 3.5" L x 1.5" W (8.9 cm x 3.8 cm)
