Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Tairona region, ca. 1000 to 1550 CE. A blackware vessel with an avian design incised on side of its rim and a small spout opposite, a fine example of the most common form of Tairona ritual ceramics. A strap handle with raised edges rises above the body; the body of the vessel presents a dynamic silhouette, bowing outward and meeting at a sharp join in the center. Incised designs around the upper body are sharp triangles reminiscent of mountain peaks or waves; a thin incised line below them suggests a horizon. Size: 8" W x 9.25" H (20.3 cm x 23.5 cm)The bird depicted is a type of Curassow, a subfamily of birds native to tropical South America and Mexico. We believe that the Curassow was sacred to the Tairona, who often sculpted ones with curly crests and downward-curving beaks that live in the Tairona area between the Santa Marta range and the Caribbean coast.
The Tairona lived in circular house platforms with areas of the houses divided for labor by gender. Ceramic manufacture seems to have been the realm of the women in the household, and small burnishing stones used for smoothing the surface of pottery prior to firing have been found in their areas. Annular vessels like this one were made specifically to be placed into tombs.
