Description:

Pre-Columbian, Argentina, late Condorhuasi-Alamito to early La Aguada (also La Aquada) culture, ca. 600 to 800 CE. An intriguing offering dish that is carved from beige-hued hardstone presenting a highly stylized anthropomorphic figure 'standing' atop a pair of attenuated legs. The flat-bottomed vessel features sturdy walls and sharply angled corners surrounding the shallow basin. The head features an expressive countenance composed of protruding tubular eyes, a bar-shaped nose above frowning lips, pinched cheeks that course from the mouth corners up to each temple, protruding ears, and bulging brows above a squat forehead. Offering vessels like this example were perhaps used during celebrations and feasts for the living or as a votive funerary offering container for the dead. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 14.4" L x 5.6" W (36.6 cm x 14.2 cm)
