Lot 56A
Central Africa, Northeast Democratic Republic of the Congo / Southeast Sudan, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A carved wooden staff with a slender, tapering shaft, surmounted by a stylized anthropomorphic head with an elongated, crest-like coiffure. The facial features are sharply defined, with almond-shaped eyes, a narrow ridge nose, and a small pursed mouth. Below the neck, the body is abstracted into a series of deeply incised, angular geometric forms representing the torso and limbs, creating a faceted, almost architectural effect. The smooth, burnished surface bears a warm patina, reflecting long handling and age. Size: 27" L x 2.75" W (68.6 cm x 7 cm)
