Ancient Greece, region of Corinth, ca. 6th century BCE. A bichrome pottery kothon vessel, also known as a plemochoe or exaleiptron, of a classic kothon form with a wide, short bulbous body, generously inverted lip to prevent spillage, and applied single handle with wing-like termini. Such vessels were primarily used for holding scented oils in ancient times, expertly wheel thrown, and beautifully decorated, this example with a band of stylized linear motifs within concentric circles in chocolate brown on tan buff ground on the upper body, additional incised and painted lines encircling the lower end, washes of russet pigment on the interior, and more chocolate brown strokes highlighting the handle and underside. Note the single handle was created in order to suspend it on the walls of a home or shrine. Thanks to evidence on painted pottery, we know that exaleiptrons like this example were used by bathing women or during funerary rites. A wonderful example. Size: 6.75" W x 2.375" H (17.1 cm x 6 cm)

- Condition: Chip to interior rim as shown. Small repair to lower body just beneath one handle terminus. Expected surface wear and paint loss as shown. Overall very good given its age.
