Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, ca. 300 to 700 CE; Mesoamerica, Maya culture, ca. 250 to 900 CE. A pair of carved stone pendants representing two distinct traditions of Pre-Columbian lapidary craftsmanship. One example is a Costa Rican greenstone pendant dating to approximately 300 to 700 CE, carved in a symmetrical form with stepped edges and drilled suspension holes flanking a central aperture. One face is decorated with incised geometric motifs, reflecting the refined stoneworking traditions associated with ancient Costa Rican greenstone ornaments. The second piece is a Maya obsidian pendant formed as a circular disk with a central perforation for suspension. The dark volcanic glass retains a glossy surface with minor edge wear consistent with age. Together, the pair reflects the importance of worked stone ornaments across ancient Central America, where materials such as greenstone and obsidian were valued for both adornment and symbolic significance. Size of larger: 2.5" L x 2.1" W (6.4 cm x 5.3 cm)
