Lot 155
Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Atlantic Watershed, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A standing female figure carved from a single piece of volcanic stone, quite impressive given the openwork under the arms and between the legs. Nude, curvy, and voluptuous, she stands with her hands holding her breasts - a possible reference to female fertility - and has a long, striated coiffure and a beautifully delineated visage. A wonderful example from the Greater Nicoya of Central America. Size: 6.25" W x 9.75" H (15.9 cm x 24.8 cm)
Provenance: Ex-Peter Arnovick Collection, San Francisco, CA
