Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. An endearing pottery figural olla assuming the form of a squatting figure; the jar emerges from his back. Many pieces created by the ancients of Central America are transformative in nature. This example is half human and half monkey. Simian creatures were favorites of Pre-Columbian artisans; monkeys were beloved for their antics which were understood as a parody of human behavior.
