Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Guanacaste / Nicoya region, ca. 200 to 600 CE; Guanacaste / Nicoya region, ca. 700 to 1500 CE. A beautiful collection of Costa Rican artifacts. First is a tall and slender figural celt with incised abstract anthropomorphic details, a gradually-widening body, a sharpened blade edge, and laterally-drilled suspension holes, all hand-carved from a mottled pale green stone with dark inclusions. Second is a later tumbaga head depicting an abstract jaguar with a surface layer of 14K gold surrounded by lovely green patina. An intriguing ensemble! Size (celt): 1.45" W x 3.75" H (3.7 cm x 9.5 cm); size (tumbaga head): 1.25" L x 0.875" W (3.2 cm x 2.2 cm).

  • Condition: Leather necklace strap included with celt. Tumbaga head was once part of a larger item. Head has loss to one ear and repair to the other. Both items have age-commensurate surface wear, light roughness in some areas, and small nicks to edge (celt) and neckline (head). Light earthen deposits throughout both items. Head has nice green patina in some areas.
