Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Nicoya region, ca. 200 to 600 CE. A lovely celt-form axe god figure of a petite rectangular form carved from mottled emerald-green stone with light inclusions. The figure stands atop fused legs and a sharpened lower edge - hence the name axe god - and holds both arms atop the slender waist. A tall rectangular panel is incised into the chest and, though missing most of the head, the pointed chin and thin mouth are still visible. Size: 0.95" W x 3" H (2.4 cm x 7.6 cm).

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired before 2000
