Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, ca. 1 to 500 CE. A tapered hand axe, with an avian form, drilled eyes, and string cut details around the body. The drilled eyes may have been used as perforations for suspension. The bottom of the celt is a sandstone-smoothed, sharpened blade. The ancient Costa Ricans were influenced by the Olmec to their north, and may have even repurposed Mesoamerican hand axes for their own purposes. This was likely a funerary offering. Size: 3.25" L x 1.05" W (8.3 cm x 2.7 cm)

Provenance: Whisnant Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, acquired over twenty years ago
