Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Atlantic watershed, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A delightful zoomorphic circular dish carved from volcanic stone. The side walls are crenelated and a head protrudes from one end, while a curved tail protrudes from the other. Pre-Columbian Costa Ricans created carved volcanic stone sculptures whose subjects are often animals, usually those who are aggressive or dangerous, like crocodiles and jaguar, with some, like this fellow, seeming to have the features of both. Size: 6.25" L x 3.6" W x 2.25" H (15.9 cm x 9.1 cm x 5.7 cm)
